Quick reference
Markup
Markup % = Profit ÷ Cost × 100
Built on cost. A 25% markup on a $1,000 cost adds $250 profit — but that $250 is only 20% of the $1,250 selling price.
Margin
Margin % = Profit ÷ Selling Price × 100
Built on price. A 20% margin needs a higher markup percentage to hit, since it's measured against the bigger number.
Selling price from margin
Price = Cost ÷ (1 − Margin)
Use this when you know your cost and the margin you need to protect.
Cost from a fixed price
Cost = Price × (1 − Margin)
Use this when the price is set (a tender ceiling, a client budget) and you need to know what you can spend.
